Last year, the YMCA of Greater Moncton helped more than 1,000 children, teens and families who otherwise might not have been able to afford the full cost of taking part in Y programs.
"And this year we can make an even bigger impact," YMCA CEO Zane Korytko says.
The Moncton Y launched its 2010 Strong Kids Campaign this week, designed to raise $20,000 by March 15 to help families send a child to summer camp, help a struggling teen find a job, enable a child to take part in fun and fitness activities, help a struggling family pay for child care or boost the confidence and skills of young people to help them avoid addiction, violence and isolation.

Much like the popular TV show "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader" many past participants, as well as even a few Battle of the Brains committee members are wondering if anyone out there is Smarter than a Spielo Slot Jockey. When asked how many times Spielo has won the coveted Battle of the Brains title many have been heard to say "too many times", however the unofficial count is 3 times. When asked to comment on their dominance at this historic fundraising event, team Captain Todd Grimm said "I think we might not even bring the title cup and the trophy with us to event this year, we're just gonna leave it at the office."

Thanks to the United Way Day of Caring, the YMCA of Greater Moncton now has its own community garden.
The objective of the community garden is to create a space for people in the surrounding area and beyond to gather and learn about where their food comes from, all while watching it grow and reaping the benefits of their labor. The community garden comes at an especially important time in consideration of the rising cost of food and the world food crisis that is continually unraveling. The Community Garden will not only provide the space for people to have access to nutritious foods that they would not normally have access to but it will help educate people on the importance of an active healthy lifestyle while preventing social isolation. What better place to do it then the YMCA! To learn how you can get involved please contact the YMCA of Greater Moncton.

Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic workout system that will blow you away. Achieve long term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exhilarating hour class ! Zumba may be spelled similarly to rumba, but this dance fitness craze actually has people doing cha-cha, merengue, salsa and mambo moves. Even people whose closest connection to Latin dance was doing the Macarena in 1996. This summer, members of the YMCA of Greater Moncton will be shaking and shimmying to an infectious Latin beat! Zumba, pronounced zoom-bah, has women and men of all age toning up, trimming down, and whittling their waists. While Zumba is aerobic, to call it exercise would be missing the point. Its avid fans -- and most need only one class to become one -- say doing Zumba is like being at a dance party.
