Peace Medallion recipients will be honoured during the 25th anniversary of YMCA World Peace Week from November 21-28, 2009.

History and Background of the YMCA Peace Medal

Peace in its many forms has long been a concern of the worldwide YMCA movement.  YMCA’s in 124 countries around the world annually join together in thought, prayer, and action for peace.

YMCA World Peace Week is unique to Canada.  It originated in 1984, when YMCA Canada decided to add an entire week of peace-related activities to follow YMCA Peace Day.  During the week, YMCA’s across Canada promote activities and educational programs to help people explore peace from a personal, community, and international perspective.

The first YMCA Peace Medallion recipients were honored in 1987.  Now, each year during YMCA World Peace Week, YMCA’s award the medal “to recognize the achievements of individuals or groups in local communities who, without any special resources, demonstrate in their lives and activities the values expressed in the World Alliance of YMCAs’ 1981 Statement on Peace”, which reads:

Peace has many dimensions.  It is not only a state of relationships among nations.  We cannot expect to live in a world of peace if we are unable to live in peace with those close to us – even those who differ from us.

Each of us must seek justice for all and harmonious development.  Humankind as a whole is inter-linked and interdependent.  The international situation compels us to seek effective ways of strengthening peace and preserving life.  In the midst of increased conflict, violence and confrontation, we must seek possibilities to be ‘peacemakers’.

The responsibility for peace begins with each person, in relationships with family and friends, and extends to community life and national activities.  There are no simple recipes.  It is ourselves who must seek – act – pray – for ways to be peacemakers.

YMCA Peace Medallion Selection Criteria

To be chosen as a recipient of the YMCA Peace Medallion the person nominated should meet as many of the following criteria as possible.
  1. The nominee has demonstrated ways to live in peace – even with those who differ from us.
  2. The nominee works for justice and harmonious development.
  3. The nominee demonstrates positive ways to be a “peacemaker”.
  4. The nominee promotes peace at any of these various levels: within the family; in the community; nationally;  or internationally.
  5. The actions of the nominee have shown the possibilities for peaceful solutions to violent situations.
