The YMCA Recognizes the Work of 48 Youth Literacy Tutors PDF Print E-mail
2009 YMCA Literacy TutorsThe YMCA of Greater Moncton held their 9th annual Literacy Luncheon, Wednesday April 22nd at the Ramada Plaza Hotel Convention centre. Sponsored by CIBC and in partnership with many community organizations, the YMCA recognized 48 outstanding youth literacy tutors from the Greater Moncton area.

The YMCA’s Youth Tutor Club was established in 2000 and offers free, confidential one-on-one tutoring to children from School District 2 in grade’s one through six who require assistance in improving their literacy skills. Each year, over 48 local high schools student from grades 9 -12 are recruited and trained as volunteers to provide this valuable service.

Both groups benefit, as tutors have an opportunity to develop leadership and the children improve upon their reading and writing skills, confidence and a positive attitude towards learning. The student’s also benefit from a positive role model, who seeks to instill values and plant the seed for life long learning.  More than 500 tutors of the YMCA of Greater Moncton Youth Literacy Program has provided more than 25 000 hours tutoring to more than 500 children.

"The enormous generosity of our volunteer tutors is a reminder that each of us should devote time and effort to improving the lives of others. We can make our community stronger and more vibrant if we each try to make a positive difference in someone's life," added Zane Korytko, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Moncton.
